Grey's Anatomy star and photographer Brad Everett Young was one of our own. Love him or hate him, he was the founder of “Jem’s Space” on myspace.com. He shared some great photography of Jem dolls, fashions, and prototypes. The information was not always correct, because his main source didn’t really have a connection to the Jem line. He is a devastating loss to the Jem community.

This was given to the companies that where selling licensed JEM items. It shows the art work that should be use for the packaging on their products. It also has PMS (Pantone Matching System) colors for correct color matching, and information about how the Hasbro copyright and how companies names need to be set up on the packages/items. Usually less than 500 of each Licensing Kit were printed, and with a budget for $10,000 to $20,000.

1985 JEM Licensing Kit (Original "single album" version)

In 1985 a single album version with only 7 color pages (Chromes 01-08 and the Packaging "box" page) was released. It only included 4 black and white pages -- only the 2 line art pages with Jem and the Holograms. It included the "Licensing Specifications" page and also included a "Licensed Product Quality Assurance Policy" which was not the double album version.

The 1985 album cover did not have the embossed confetti. It did not include the bi-fold promotional write up, Rio (Chromes 09-10,) the Rockin' Roadster (Chrome 11,) Stare Stage (Chrome 12,) or the Misfits (Chromes 13-17), or the Packaging page with Chromes 18,19.

1986 JEM Licensing Kit (Full "double album" version)

1986 JEM Licensing Kit This looks like a 12 inch double album record sleeve. The cover is embossed. It has a night scene design that covers the inside. The sheets and folder can be slide into either side. The back cover is pink, just Hasbro's address in the lower left corner (missing from this scan.)

1986 JEM Licensing Kit The bi-fold promotional folder has the Jem illustration from the doll boxes. The background art was changed to outlines. (This may seem familiar, because it's one of the inspirations for this site's design.) The inside has information about the doll line, show, and promotion(s), basically telling the other companies why they should license Jem products. The back of the folder has no information, just a palm tree and confetti.

Truly Outrageous
With the tremendous growth of music videos, the popularity of MTV,™ and their strong influence on today's youth, Hasbro has developed JEM, a fashion doll line with a unique approach to doll play, and a fabulous license for you to profit from!

The JEM concept combines music and fashion with a contemporary graphics and designs, unlike any other doll concept in the marketplace today. JEM's theme centers around a beautiful, young woman of the '80s with a secret, dual identity. Off stage, she's Jerrica Benton, co-owner of Starlight MUsic and the benefactor of the Starlight House for homeless girls. With the help of a holographic computer image named Synergy, that focuses her power through LED earrings, Jerrica mysteriously transforms into JEM, a truly Outrageous rock star!

Only the Beginning
For the first time in the history of Hasbro, JEM was introduced though a spectacular animated TV series as part of the Super Sunday lineup. Fifteen episodes filled with music, magic and mayhem are guaranteed to spark excitement among the young audience. JEM is also the first toy line to be introduced simultaneously in the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, Europe and Australia, at all the major toy fairs.

The JEM storyline relates Jerrica's constant struggle to keep her father's former partner, Eric Raymond, and his "new wave" band, appropriately named The Misfits, from gaining control of Starlight Music. Jem and The Holograms, made up of Jerrica's sister Kimber and friends Aja and Shana, must fight with every note they have to outwit their evil counterparts. Rio, Jerrica's boyfriend is also JEM's road manager and has no idea that JEM and Jerrica are one is the same, adding the intrigue of a love triangle to the JEM story.

Getting Down to Business
JEM is hot and rockin' to beat of a $10 million advertising campaign, featuring a dynamic television commercial developed by Charlex (of the rock video fame), that truly captures the contemporary excitement of JEM. Seven exciting commercials will be shown in over eighty markets on network stations and the Nickelodeon cable channel.

OUT-RAGEOUS Promotion Support includes:

  • The JEM TRULY OUTRAGEOUS AUDITION CONTEST, a sensational promotion is association with MTV™ where kids rehearse the JEM theme song and call a special 800 number to "audition" via telephone directly to JEM. The grand prize winner will receive an all-expense paid trip to New York City to attend the 1986 MTV Music Awards. Over a thousand prizes will be given away including video cassette players, tour jackets and a Jem video library. This promotion will be advertised on TV with a special commercial.
  • Special premium offers and exclusive promotion information will be included in each package of JEM dolls and accessories.

I Got My Eye On You
The airwaves will explode in 1986 with the spring premiere of JEM made-for-TV movie, followed by a weekly half-hour television series. See Jem as she travels the world, makes movies and sings to aid hungry nations.

Music Is Magic
The JEM line extensions provide a contemporary music oriented play environment that continues the dual identity concept. Daytime fashions convert into exciting stage costumes. The Rockin' Roadster sportscar houses an FM radio. The Backstager dressing room playset has built-in speaker that hooks up to any radio. And the ultimate Star Stage looks like an electric keyboard on the outside, but opens to reveal an office setting that changes into a stage and comes complete with a cassette tape player.

She's Got The Power
Jem has the power to soar to the top of the charts and become the hottest licensing sensation. There's music in the air, so get into the groove -- with JEM!

Besides this folder, there are 20 sheets that contain the artwork from the doll boxes, and playsets. (the art for the Rock Backstager, and fashions were not included) Sewing labels and line art are also included in this kit.

  • Sheet 7: The sheet for Rio shows him with brown hair.
  • Sheets 1-12: These sheets have a label next to each artwork that says "Chrome#" then a number.
Chrome refers to the color transparency that artwork would be sent on.

  • "New Look" Holograms*,
  • Danse,
  • Raya,
  • Jetta,
  • Synergy,
  • the Starlight Girls,

  • KJEM (no known Sharon Knettell illistrations),
  • New Wave Waterbed (Sharon Knettell illistration was created),
  • Video Madness (no known Sharon Knettell illistrations).

*=used for US Family Home Video art.

1988 update(?)
If a 1988 update was created (or to be created) it may have liked wildly different from the previous updates. Hasbro was no longer using Sharon Knettell to create the box art illustration for the dolls and playsets, so they probably would not hire her just to create illustrations for the JEM Licensing Kit Updates. They may have planned on using in-house designers to create something similar or used the Presentation Art by Judith Nelson since that art was already created and available to them.
